The second Practical Classics Restoration Show at the NEC over the weekend of March 28th and 29th was every bit as exciting as the first!  The number of car clubs was said to have almost doubled and there were many more autojumblers than last year; there was also plenty for those not so keen on oily rags! Bristol Classic Restoration Show 2013

The Saint Volvo P1800 71 DXC

The Footman James Bristol Classic Restoration Show 2013

This year’s Bristol Classic Vehicle Restoration Show was again held at the popular venue of the Bath & West Showground, Shepton Mallet, Somerset.

The Volvo Enthusiasts Club, as in previous year’s, took a large stand in the Showering Hall, with 3 Volvo’s on display - 2 1800’s and a 740 Pick-up.

Pride of place was Kevin’s, our Founder, recently returned to the road, after 40 years, 1962 P1800 which was used by now Sir Roger Moore in the very first series of TV’s The Saint – ST 1 aka 71 DXC.

Keeping ST 1 company was Gavin’s, of Count Olaf Volvo Specialists - Wellington, Somerset Tel: 07796005177, ‘PUF’ a 1964 1800S which is undergoing the initial stages of a full restoration in his workshop at Foxmoor Industrial Estate, Wellington. Gavin, used to pass by this car on a drive in London on his way to school and never thought one day he would be lucky enough to be its owner. The car will require extensive work to the body which has suffered badly from rust and Gavin had removed, for the show, several sections from the outer panels to allow visitors to see the true extent of corrosion and what was required to rebuild the car. The car caused much interest with visitors who were keen to discuss the work required and methods to be used.

Also on the stand was Colin Hughes, the Club’s Principle Contact, very well converted Volvo 740 Pick-up which as covered a staggering 1 Million plus Miles. The 740 Estate was used as a Taxi before being converted into a pick-up by a motor cycle enthusiast to carry his bikes – Why didn’t Volvodoit, excellent!

Also manning the stand was Chris Tye, a fellow Jensen P1800 owner, who is currently restoring one of the very rare P1800S’s (only 2000 built) which were built by Volvo using almost all the same parts as the Jensen cars but in Sweden, before the new bodyshell of the 1964 1800S was produced with the later seats and interior.

Visiting the Show over the weekend were a number of Volvo’s which included a very rare 1972 1800E owned by Douglas Rice from the USA, who purchased the US Spec car new in 1972 while working temporarily in mainland Europe. After working in Europe Douglas moved to Britain where he still lives and so the car never actually got to the US. The car is very unusual, being one the very last coupe models produced, which was built alongside the 1800ES production. The car features many of the parts used on the Estate, including the interior and steel wheels. Kevin, who is recognised as the authority on the 1800 informed the owner that he knew of only 2 RHD Type ‘W’ 1800E’s in the UK and had only actually seen one in the flesh, coincidently the same light blue metallic (code 111) and black interior.

Throughout the show Members of the Club manning the stand were kept very busy answering Technical and Membership queries. A great show! If you would like to help in the future why not contact Kevin.

Our thanks to all those who came along over the weekend and supported the Show and the Volvo Enthusiasts Club. Also to those members who brought along their cars either on the stand or in the Classic car park and those manning the Club display.

Our next visit to Shepton Mallet will be for Great Western Autojumble which this year will also have Club Displays and Live Music from the Rock & Roll Years, so put it in your diary and come along, I am sure it will be a great weekend.

LATEST: Date for the diary - Great Western AutoJumble and Rock & Roll Classic Car Show – featuring live music , cars etc from the Rock & Roll years of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s 15-16 February, 2014

The R W Thomson Memorial Rally Aberdeen 30th June 2013

The Saint Volvo P1800 71 DXC

The R W Thomson Memorial Rally was held on the 30th June 2013
Gordon Woodham our newly elected Northern Scottish Representative had organised an entry to the rally He worked hard in giving directions/information and places to stay. So thanks for that. Not knowing anything about the show other than his say so -- three of us set off to join him-- Me in my 1970 –145-- Graeme and Leslie Muir in their 1967 Amazon 131 and Dave and Heather Wilson in their 1969 -140
The show itself was well supported from the Harry Potter Anglia through most makes of British cars –and Motor cycles --American cars and a military vehicle We also had the usual Agricultural representation and stationery engines—So as you can a imagine very in keeping with the local interest of the area
The oldest vehicle was a 1913 Model T ---Our pitch was marked out and we joined Gordon in his 1990 240 GLT So our Volvo Enthusiast Club was represented with four vehicles through the ages The whole site was beautifully situated in the middle of Stonehaven with the usual stalls and burger bar—and the rain held off!!!!
Also what was interesting we gave out three membership forms to prospective folk Iain Mitchell who had a P1800 and a Volvo engine Marcus Another David Jones who had a P1800 and spares for sale This was on show and the third was to the chairman of the day Robert Duncan also has a Volvo—Now Robert has invited us back for next year and has given me permission to use some of the wording from the events program and this makes interesting reading as follows—
“What is the R.W.Thomson Fellowship and why a Rally?
Well simple answer is --that R.W.Thomson invented, among other things, pneumatic tyres, and the vast majority of cars use them. Being a local lad it seems appropriate to hold a car rally in his name. Contrary to what was popular belief Dunlop was not the inventor of pneumatic tyre. He produced a tyre for bicycles in 1888 and applied for a patent, however two years after his application --it was confirmed by the Patent Office that Thomson was the originator of the pneumatic tyre, which he produced and patented on December 10th 1845
Robert William Thomson was a prolific inventor --inventing and patenting a number of other useful items. Some dozen or so can be seen under Thomson British patents list He was also the originator of the washing machine—His important contributions to modern transport including the Road Steamer and solid rubber tyres should be more widely acknowledged. Thomson should no longer be “the forgotten genius”
Thank you to Robert Duncan for allowing me to quote from the Events Program and another thank you to Gordon for selecting such a good event-Our first into the Northern Scottish part of the UK
All in all a good trip
Thank you for your company ---Russ Evans Northern Representative VEC

Founders Day national gathering July

VOLVO ENTHUSIASTS CLUB ‘FOUNDERS DAY’ 2014 - Celebrating the Club’s 25th Birthday

To celebrate the Volvo Enthusiasts Club 25th Birthday, the Club’s Founder and current Hon President, Kevin Price, organised a ‘Founders Day’ for all Volvo owners and enthusiasts at the Jinney Ring Craft Centre, near Bromsgrove in Worcestershire.

The venue was perfect for the event with the Club taking space on the lawn with the back drop of the Malvern Hills in the distance.

Members, friends and Volvo owners arrived from 11am and were greeted with a gift of a Limited Edition Commemorative 25 year Birthday mug and event Rally plate.

Attendance at the event was excellent with a cross section of all the models the club covers, from very rare (only 6 survive according to Volvo Sweden) 1952 PV 445 Convertible to a 2000 Volvo V70. Cars attending also included a Volvo 850 BTCC Racing Estate, a 240 pick-up, lots of 1800’s and 120’s, plus a pair of now very rare 360’s.

Voting for ‘Best Car’ etc as always was undertaken by attending Members, with awards being Sponsored by Cherished Vehicle Insurance, who have recently tailored an insurance scheme specifically with benefits for Volvo Enthusiasts Club Members.

Best Car voted by attending Members, was awarded to John Kemp’s beautiful 1968 Volvo 131. John was one of the Founder Members of the VEC back in October 1989, when the club started with just 5O members, so a worthy winner.

The day started off very wet and I didn’t appreciate the alarm going off at 5-30 am—however the VEC had been invited to attend the above show this was in conjunction with the Classic Wheels Club and we were their guests and in their display area curtsey of Graeme Muir. You will see from the picture that David with his Red 144 ”Poppy” is admiring his car while finishing off and ice cream (actually talking to his wife Heather who is in the car). Yes folks the weather did change-- by 12 -30 just spitting a little and by 2pm the hard standing we were on was dry Yes unusual --hard standing---we were at the Crichton College and making use of the facilities of all weather parking--No messy field no wet shoes and no stuck vehicles—all in all –a well run show—plenty of marshals on duty.
The variety of vehicles brought back many memories which is one reason so many folk go---This year the selection was a little low due to the heavy rain in the morning This however did not stop us Volvo Enthusiasts—as you can see a 144 a 131 and a 145 were on show along with a dry place to sit for my two dogs
The college was quite pleasant with old buildings in the red sandstone and new buildings built in keeping with the surroundings which made an  extremely pleasant area to walk round and exercise the pups.
So thanks to Graeme and Lesley for the invitation--- we enjoyed the show--- and whilst we were in nostalgic mode most of the time observing vehicles there were many youngsters there all interested in the great variety on show. Nice to meet up with club members and other like minded folk --Another point of note it was only £2 to enter This must be the cheapest value for money show ever---for the two quid you received a detailed program and a commemorative mug---how do they do it for that price.
How about some of you other Volvo members coming along next time?

Tony's 121 for sale

Volvo 121 4-door saloon 1966 in Grey - £4,500 or near offer

This tidy little car in Volvo 80-1 Grey has had just 2 previous owners.  I bought it back in 2011 and it was in good solid condition with a really nice tidy red interior. The engine was in excellent running order and there was very little to do to bring the whole thing back into use. I decided to do the few repairs to the body that were needed and had it completely resprayed as well; all the usual problem areas were in (unusually!) great condition and I only had to replace both inner wing tops (literally the piece that the wings bolt onto) and a small section of out rigger. It now looks fantastic and is going for MOT later this week. The engine runs as sweet as anything, it starts without any problem and ticks over beautifully - there is no smoke from the exhaust either. The interior is in super condition - both seats and door cards; the floor mats are superb, although it could do with a new gaiter for the gear lever; the headlining is like new and I have never known a boot mat to be so good. I have left some work for the new owner to do though as there is no overdrive or servo fitted; the engine has been cleaned but not painted and the dash has a couple of narrow splits in the usual places, but Simon at Brookhouse Volvo can obtain these. All in all it is a genuine car with just 88601 miles on the clock; from the overall condition I would say this is probably correct. Documents are in my name.

This was without doubt the best Bristol Classic Car Show so far and our Club Stand featured 2 Jensen built P1800’s – a very rare sight considering there under 20 on the road in Britain today and also Colin Hughes’s‘all singing and dancing’ 760 turbo Lowliner Estate.

1973 P1800ES for sale

Volvo P1800ES for sale

I am offering my 1973 Volvo P1800ES for sale. I have had this car quite a few years. Meanwhile, I have acquired a lot of other cars, so I am not giving this the full attention it deserves. I would like to sell it to an enthusiast who will look after and appreciate it.
It is valued at around £7,000, but I would accept sensible offers.

David Jones.

Colin Waudby's Endurance Rally Prepared 1968 Volvo 123GT

My car is a 123GT which we restored for endurance type rallies a couple of year ago. The B18 engine has been replaced with a B20 and big valve head, compression increased to 10:1; D Camshaft with lightened cam followers, tubular push rods (Iskendarien) and double valve springs; 8kg flywheel. Standard SU’s, revised needles. 4-1 exhaust manifold and 2” bore exhaust. M41 gearbox with uprated D type overdrive. Low ratio diff with LSD. Suspension bushes are polybushes, heavier front anti-roll bar fitted and Bilstein shockers all round. The Road springs are standard but I’m about to replace these with linear uprated springs lowered by 25mm. The alternator has been rewound to give 75A output.

Rally Success – Our Congratulations to Colin Waudby

An update letter

..... I don’t do many. But the rallies I do are typically HERO’s reliability trials. I’ve done LEJOG each year since 2005 (in a Lancia Fulvia Coupe, Porsche 911 E and in the Amazon for the last 3 years). We’ll be in this year’s LEJOG too. Usually do Three Castles, but this year; instead I just finished the Summer Trial a couple of weeks ago; 3 day event based around Goodwood. We managed 1st in class, 6th overall and won silver medals. Good event despite the weather!

I mentioned I was changing the road springs- this I did in time for the Summer Trial. I fitted 25mm lowered, linear rate springs from Skandix: these are Swedish made. (Skandix is located about 10km from where I am working in Germany – a very impressive outfit, immaculate warehouse and very smart office – definitely a cut above.) The Car was much better: ride much improved, the car sat down much better and handled better too. With the heavier anti-roll bar and a bit of negative camber plus some tyre pressure tweaking, there was just a nice touch of understeer (standard size tyres on 5.5” Minilites)

Re Photo’s of the car: The first & fourth are on LEJOG and are by Fracesco Rastrelli Fotografo.

Kind Regards Colin Waudby

(NOTE From Kevin: I know Scandix well - very professional, worth a look on their website www.skandix.com)
